When mothers say their baby has its father's eyes or nose, there is probably some truth in it. After all - if they share the same genes, there will be similarities. But some fathers may doubt their paternity for whatever reason. It could be the baby is too dissimilar, has different coloured hair or they simply have doubts about their partner's faithfulness. Whatever the reason, simple paternity testing can resolve the matter.
Paternity Testing - Real Proof
Many parents spend time mulling over their baby's looks and how much they look like their mummy or daddy. Research suggests however that comparing their dimpled cheeks to the father's cheeks is completely natural. Experts say mothers have it in-built in their evolutionary make-up to find paternal similarities even when there aren't any. Of course paternity testing confirms for sure that a baby is the biological offspring of a man, but saying a child and man share the same nose isn't always enough.
Paternity Testing - A Mother's Instincts
It's thought that a mother's instincts are to find similarities in order to convince their husband or partner that they are indeed the child's father. Before the invention of paternity testing, couples relied on trust and instinct when it came to parenthood. There is no other way apart from paternity testing to prove paternity, and committing to children is a huge undertaking if the man has any doubts. Scientists say that the female strategy of comparing likeness of their baby to their partner has evolved over years in an attempt to alleviate male anxiety over paternity. If the father is reassured the baby is visibly a chip off the old block, he's more likely to commit to look after the mother and child.
Demanding Paternity Testing
Some men, especially celebrities, are not content with comparisons to their lips or hair colour, but demand paternity testing. Mick Jagger and Boris Becker for instance both demanded paternity testing before acknowledging children as their own. Both men now contribute to their children's upkeep. Sometimes however there is a likeness between child and father that is so obvious that paternity testing might be unnecessary. But even where likeness is not obvious research into mothers showed that 77% of them said their baby girls looked like their father, and all the mothers questioned said their boys looked like their father. Yet independent judges said that half of the babies in question in fact looked like their mum, with just one in three looking like their dad. So looks can be deceiving - only paternity testing offers the objective truth.
