BH

Basset Hounds were originally bred to hunt small game, like rabbits. They are scent hounds, bred to hunt using the scent of their prey. Because of this, Basset Hounds will adamantly and single-minded follow a scent.

Basset Hounds are generally calm and actually quite lazy. They are prone to weight gain, though, and should be walked frequently. They were bred to be pack dogs so they enjoy being around their family and other pets. Wanting to fit in to family life, they do not like being left alone. If left alone for long periods of time, they can become destructive and show off their distinctive howl (also known as a bay) instead of a bark.

With their stubborn personality, Basset Hounds are not easy to train. Unless they are persuaded it is something they should do, these dogs will pretend not to hear you (even with those big ears). Generally, Basset Hounds are even-tempered, gentle, happy dogs that make great family pets.

They are generally well-behaved, but can be very stubborn. They are notorious for drooling. They are prone to weight gain and should be walked frequently.

Major Health Concerns: The Basset Hound is prone to obesity and should be walked often. Obesity may result in back and joint disorders. They are prone to bloat, ear infections and eye diseases.

Interesting Fact: The Basset Hound has the largest bone density of all canines.
